A few days ago, I, Dr. Pete Lorins, addressed a letter to the President of the United States (POTUS), namely, President Donald J. Trump, with a plausible alternative solution on the pressing TPS issue that has been affecting people of a few nationalities (e.g., Syrians), but for the most part, Haitian TPS holders. Thus, please find both my letter and the POTUS' response as follows:
MY LETTER:
Dear President Donald J. Trump:
As an American who voted for you three times, and on behalf of Refugee Immigration Advocates ("Refugee IA"), I would love to humbly make the following plea-centric proposal to you, as our one-of-a-kind 45th and 47th President of these United States (POTUS) and Leader of the Free World.
I have been watching many of our most learned Americans respond quite reactively to your unprecedented and impressive immigration law enforcement endeavors, and some have even reacted negatively, viciously, and unsubstantially about this matter. Thus, I felt the need to chime in Mr. President.

First of all, I'd like to quickly assert that, as an American, who had the pleasure of voting the first time as an American for you after my own naturalization, which was signed by you, kind sir, I support the enforcement of all U.S. immigration laws and thus this proposal is neither a request to bypass such enforcements, nor is it a request to encourage illegality. However, it has become a conflict resolution issue at this point considering the fact that the Biden Administration did err by allowing so many immigrants to arrive here under what is known as a "Temporary" Protective Status (TPS), something that was flawed from the onset as there was no clear path to ensure that people did return to their homeland once the temporary status ended. In a nutshell, Mr. Biden, did induce the U.S. government to err, by not establishing clear procedure for temporary immigrants like Haitians and Syrians, who were always supposed to be here "temporarily". Yet, those immigrants did detrimentally rely on Mr. Biden (and thus our country) by accepting to come here. They relied on Mr. Biden and our government to their detriment, which resulted in them in being put in state of legal limbo, which is now forcing your administration to use U.S. resources to undo what Mr. Biden carelessly did on behalf of our government kind sir.
However, now that these people are here, after they were invited to come here by one of our presidents, in a very ad hoc (unvetted) manner, many American stakeholders have been relying on their zeal and hunger for work on them to their detriment. Needless to say, their removal from America will directly affect a lot of American businesses, since the jobs that they have been doing are the types of jobs that Americans either are not willing or not able to do. Thus, cumulatively, their removal will have many adverse effects on our nation at large. The latter is so obvious that the country is torn about with people of all races, creeds, national origins and religions having various opinions about it. Moreover, the idea of people seeing their loved ones with ankle monitors as if they are hardened criminals is causing psychological trauma which is ricocheting in the minds and souls of Americans of all races, national origins and religions. Beyond the latter, there is a dehumanizing aspect to it as most of these people did not arrive here as criminals and now there is a perception that they are being treated as such.
Accordingly, please find our proposal as follows...
5-Prong TPS Deportation Alternative Solution Proposal
Since there was no proper vetting of these immigrants, essentially our government (e.g., refugees and migrants) when they arrived by the previous administration, it is only fair to create a task force to formulate a vetting process that is specifically designed to properly vet them into America either now or in the future.
As an alternative to deporting them immediately, accord them with more time to find new paths to legalization, however, with maximum and minimum fines relative to the number of days that they have remained or continue to remain in America without properly legalization.
Provide them with a mandatory opportunity to use a TPS Extension Self-report App (TPS Monitor App) that can be used to update their intent and progress towards a path to legalization including a desire to remain here or self-deport.
Enable the TPS Monitor App with features that allow them to communicate with their assigned immigration monitor/probation officers as to be able to seamlessly pay any required fines, update their personal information (e.g., address, new employment etc.)
Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach to removal/deportation and essentially losing millions in manpower, create a system to mainly remove those that have either committed crimes of moral turpitude during their stay in America or used bad faith in working with their assigned officers as to essential fail a "fitness to stay in the U.S." test. Moreover, continue to allow Haitians to come to America on quotas-based and sponsorship models all while vetting thoroughly to prevent Haitian gang members from coming to America.
Mr. President, on behalf of Refugee IA and America at large, and as a voter who voted for you three consecutive times, I'd like to ask you to use the most compassionate approach in dealing with this crisis as it has now become more than a Haitian or Syrian crisis. In fact, it has become a very precedential humanitarian crisis, which will affect others' views of America for years to come.
Nevertheless, I must assert that Haitians do have a duty to rebuild their own failed country. it is not our responsibility to do so. Still, we should take a leadership role to encourage stability in Haiti as that will have in turn deterred a plethora of people that would have otherwise risked their very lives to come here. We need the type of strong immigration law enforcement that your administration has modeled but we can't lose humanity in the process. In a nutshell, we cannot allow the kind of laissez faire approach that was perpetuated by Mr. Biden's administration to induce us to appear to be heartless to the World.
We still want to remain the World's BEACON OF HOPE... that "City Upon a Hill" and ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. The World is watching Mr. President. Now that we are in this predicament together, we cannot let it leave a bad taste in our mouths as a nation and in that of the World at large. It would be imprudent and unamerican not to look at the big picture and how it can affect how we are perceived as the top nation on Earth.
It is with teary eyes that I ask you to allow God to help you do what's right by our nation at large, kind sir! As an immigrant who has taken advantage of countless American opportunities, I cannot just stand by the sidelines and not share my wisdom with you. "Dr. King is known to have said, that in the end, what will hurt the most is the silence of our friends." I simply could not stay silent on this matter.
May God bless you, Mr. President! And may God bless our amazing country. USA - USA - USA - USA!
Best Regards,
